Interview with Marie - Josée Taillefer: make visible deafness
Posted on August 12, 2012
Marie-Josée
Taillefer and René Simard spokesperson of the first campaign of the
«Fondation sourdine» to school oralist of Quebec for hearing impaired
children or deaf, Marie-Josée Taillefer agreed to at the outset we grant
an interview.
Who
better to understand the importance of our awareness campaign to inform
the population on the importance of hearing in our life the days this
pair of extraordinary people, Marie-Josée Taillefer and René Simard, who
have a life absolutely inspiring with their two deaf children
experience.
Birth of Olivier, Marie-Josée and René have always thought they had a very quiet child, very quiet. Far from silent, the babbling of Olivier did not believe that he did not intend. However, over time, these small sounds began to subside as he heard them not; It had therefore not reflex to repeat them. However, as each of us, he felt the vibrations. For example, if an object falling on the ground, he could startled not because he had heard him, but because he felt it. Marie-Josée
says that they found at one point that they were not able to secure
their son only by the sound of their voice when he was crying. Olivier soothed only when he saw his parents. They therefore decided to have net. It is at the age of 11 months that the verdict fell. Olivier is diagnosed deaf.
Early stimulation: important!
For Rosalie, arrived two years later, it was completely different. From birth, a new apparatus for detecting deafness in infants was tested at the hospital. The same verdict of deafness is established to Rosalie. For the couple, the news was a shock. Experience
with Olivier showed them how it is crucial to act quickly, to sail the
child and to immediately adopt appropriate behaviours to ensure that the
latter will not delay since the development of the language of a child
builds before the age of 3 years. "For example, if a child starts to talk to 1 year, it is that he has heard for a year." Imagine the delay can take a child if it begins to hear only in 5 years! ", we emphasized Marie-Josée.
Olivier has worn hearing aids from the age of 1 year to stimulate his hearing. "Our son when he was in an audiologic cabin for testing, well intended pure sounds and he reacted. However, we quickly realized that, in everyday life, he was unable to distinguish the sounds. Exchanges with specialists of the hearing led us clearly: Olivier had very late! ", we reveal Marie-Josée. As parents, they have even learned sign language to be able still able to communicate with their children.
Despite
this, Marie-Josée and René who always wanted to give their children all
the communication tools to facilitate autonomy turned to the cochlear
implant. Supported and supported by Dr. Ferron to
Quebec and his team, their two children were operated: 5 years for
Olivier and 4 years for Rosalie.
Marie-Josée recalls how deafness is a sneaky disability, it is not easy to detect. "We do not think that the hearing of our child can be reached, it is assumed at birth that he means well." Imagine,
you are 24 hours a day with your child and, despite the fact that
Olivier is deaf, it took to gather all these small signs have a
reasonable doubt and decide to take steps to assess his hearing. Then imagine a child who has a mild deafness or moderate. Often, parents are in will report only to the school, when the child will have difficulties to read and write. "If there is any doubt, consult an audiologist to be net", we entrust Marie-Josée.
Olivier and Rosalie: what do do now?
Marie-Josée is very proud of the path of his children. Despite
the obstacles at school because of their difference and all the efforts
that they had to deploy, they were able to carve out a place in
society. Rosalie is dance. She is in her second year at the University in Visual arts. She is also part time in Omer DeSerres where she advises the clients.
Olivier, he held a position in electronics at Bombardier. He is the living example, according to Marie-Josée, that can be an oraliste with a sign. Olivier left only three months in the West to learn English. A boy determined to get a place! He worked also as a server
